When the Power Goes Off
Power outages sometimes happen. Outages can be caused by storms, high wind, animals in substation, lightning, equipment failure, tree contact, and public accidents. Cedar-Knox PPD will respond to trouble/service calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Customers having a 254 prefix should call (402) 254-6291 and all other customers can use 1-800-891-5196. After regular working hours, company personnel on duty will answer your call. Duty personnel use two-way radios, so allow time between conversations to receive and transmit messages.

If severe storms or general outages occur, personnel is usually at the office. ALWAYS remember that we want to be notified promptly if outages occur - don't hesitate to call. We will respond as quickly as possible.

Power Outage Checklist

  • Check breaker and fuses- have a supply of fuses on hand. Most partial outages result from a short or overload on a wiring circuit.
  • To determine whether outage is a an individual outage or not, check to see if the neighbors have power.
  • Stay away from power lines - Consider any downed power line to be energized and extremely dangerous.

Calling to Report a Problem

  • Please state your name, address or location and PHONE NUMBER.
  • Provide a brief report of the problem.

Danger! Use Caution! Contact with high voltage energized power lines is sudden death. You should assume that all power lines are energized. If a pole is broken or a conductor has improper clearance, because of an accident or storm, notify us IMMEDIATELY.

Standby Generators: Warning!
If you use a standby generator during power outages, remember that improper generator hookup can create a serious problem for the safety of our service personnel. It is very important that your generator has a double-throw switch. This switching device is used to transfer the electric service from the power line to the generator. If not used properly, feedback from the generator voltage back on to the power lines could endanger the lives of the line crews working to restore your power.

Critical Accounts
If you or someone in your household depends on an electric-powered life support system, we want to know.

When we have advance notice of a situation like this, the account will be flagged. If a planned outage occurs, we will be aware and make every effort to notify you in advance.

Sometimes a storm, an accident, or equipment failure, which Cedar-Knox PPD has no control over, will cause your power to be out. We will do everything we can to restore power as quickly as possible. To avoid a crisis, we suggest you do some advance planning:

  1. Call us, we may be able to offer some help.
  2. Install a double throw transfer switch so you could rent or borrow an emergency standby generator.
  3. Consider purchasing your own personal standby generator.

Cedar-Knox PPD cares about our customers and your well being. We know being without electricity is an inconvenience, but we certainly don't want it to turn into a crisis. Let us help you in any way we can.

Electric Heat Advantage
"Clean"- "Safe" - "Economical"

Electricity offers many choices to fit a wide variety of needs, from room-by-room alternatives, to convenient whole-house systems, to energy-efficient water heating. Electric equipment offers clean, safe, economical comfort.

Electric heat can be installed in any home. If you are building a new home or remodeling or planning an addition, consider the benefits of using electric heat. If you have a problem area in your present home such as an entrance or basement recreation room that's chilly, please contact us about alternative types of electric heat. Electric heat can be installed anywhere in your home.

Electric heating is ranked #1 in cleanliness, convenience, comfort and economy. Listed by most families as their first choice for a new heating system, 70 to 90 percent of new homes being built in many areas are all-electric homes.

Home Efficiency Checklist
Are you aware that there are a number of easy, inexpensive "do it yourself" projects that will reduce your heating and cooling costs and also make your home a healthier more comfortable place to live.

Although it's commonly believed that a new heating or cooling unit will make your house more efficient, the only way to make your house more efficient is to tighten up the structure itself.

For more information on energy efficient measures, please contact us at gwiese@hartel.net.

Safety Education Program
Cedar-Knox PPD believes that education is the best prevention from electrical accidents. To reinforce this belief, Cedar-Knox PPD offers an electricity safety program for 4, 5, and 6th grade students in area schools, as well as for community organizations. Customer service representative will come to your school or organizational meeting and talk about the many benefits of electricity as well as electrical safety. The program includes a safety film and explanation of electric safety in various situations. If you have a request for a special situation, we will try to tailor a presentation that fits your needs. For further information or to set up a presentation, contact Gary Wiese at (402) 254-6291 or (800) 891-5196 or email him at gwiese@hartel.net.

Energy Youth Camp
Cedar-Knox PPD sponsors area District youth (9th, 10th, and 11th graders) to attend the Rural Electric Youth Camp at the State 4-H camp near Halsey, Nebraska every year.

Cedar-Knox PPD pays all expenses, including transportation, for the youth to learn about energy generation, electric safety, the legislative process, and careers in the rural electric field. The week is also filled with fun activities, including sports tournaments, canoeing, dancing, a get-acquainted party, and some free time to socialize and make new friends. Participants also have a chance to win a trip to Washington, D.C.

Harold Martindale Scholarship
Cedar-Knox PPD is proud to sponsor the Harold Martindale Scholarship at Northeast Technical Community College (NTCC) in Norfolk, Nebraska. The scholarship covers full tuition for one year at NTCC and is awarded to a deserving student residing in the District service area enrolled in the lineman program. NTCC and local school officials designate the scholarship recipient.

The Harold Martindale Scholarship was established as a tribute to Harold Martindale's 46 years as manager of Cedar-Knox PPD and his dedication in making the District a leader in the state and nation.

Please inquire with your local high school counselor about this scholarship.
